Brian Bruney Activated, Jose Veras Sent Packing

The Yankees have just activated Brian Bruney from the disabled list after two bouts with an elbow injury. In doing so, they have designated Jose Veras for assignment. Veras, who is out of minor league options has been absolutely terrible. Wouldn't be surprised if a team like Washington picked him up.

Sunday Primer

Well it has certainly been an interesting Subway Series thus far. As usual, a no-named, inexperience pitcher had the Yankees' number as Fernando Nieve was dominant. Andy Pettitte was not.

The rubber match takes place today as Johan Santana takes on AJ Burnett. With all of the struggles that Burnett has had in recent days, specifically coming off of that Boston debacle, a good outting today would go far in regaining confidence from the Yankee Manager and the Yankee faithful.

MLB Notes:

---Major League Baseball's trade market may be down one star as it looks like Jake Peavy may be out as much as 12 weeks with an ankle tendon injury. Stay tuned.

---The Rockies won their 10th straight game behind Staten Island's own Jason Marquis. For a team that has already fired their manager (Clint Hurdle) they have certainly corrected something. Unfortunately, they have no shot at winning the NL West but if they keep it up they may just be a team that plays a factor in the very crowded NL wild-card picture.

---Game 5 of the NBA Finals takes place tonight in Orlando. Kobe Bryant and the Lakers look to take home the title, while Dwight Howard and the Magic look to stay alive and force another trip back to Los Angeles.

---More about this tomorrow on the show, but I have to say that Friday night's hockey game was truly special. Imagine being Bill Guerin... Just a few months ago, he was in hockey pergatory AKA a New York Islander, and now he is a stanley cup champion.

Penguins & Luis Castillo

Circumstances have forced a limitation on blogging for the weekend. We will return in full force tomorrow. However, two words will certainly be a hot topic on Monday's show...

'Penguins' and 'Castillo'

(Especially because Barry was there in person to see all that happened last night).

A Very Anxious Subway Series is About to Begin...
Friday, June 12, 2009, 04:20 PM - MLB, Yankees, Mets

Both New York teams are in desperate need of wins, not so much for the standing, but for their mindsets. Despite losing 2 out of 3 to the Phillies at home, the Mets should be proud that they didn't give up and should be hopeful that they were only a few plays away from completing a sweep. John Maine's turned to land on the DL has come. Unreal.

Bad Night to be a New York Baseball Fan

Tough losses by both the Mets and Yanks tonight as each limps into the first round of the 2009 Subway Series...

Mets lose a second straight extra inning game to fall four games behind the Phillies while the Red Sox came from behind to beat the Yankees 4-3. Boston is now 8-0 against the Yankees so far this season.

I am on record as saying they are the Yankees' Daddy.

Must-Win Games for New York Baseball Teams Tonight?
Thursday, June 11, 2009, 06:59 PM - MLB, Yankees, Mets, NBA
Posted by Mike Ferrara
There may be such a thing as must-win games in June after all. Despite the Yankees only being one game out of first place going into tonight, they cannot afford to lose an eighth straight game to Boston for several reasons.

The Red Sox have gotten into the Yankees' head and they need to break out of the slump tonight with their ace CC Sabathia on the mound. Boston is a team the Yankees will most likely have to get past in order to make it to the World Series, and if they keep this pace up, it will be even that much harder.

As far as the Mets are concerned, I think their game tonight is close to a must-win, but won't kill them if they do not. Losing last night's game hurts a lot for many reasons, and a bounce-back performance tonight would do the team well headed into the Subway Series this weekend. Tim Redding on the mound doesn't help their chances any.

---Game four of the NBA Finals is on tongiht as well. Luckily with David Stern and the NBA preferring to schedule their playoff games so late, both baseball games will most likely be over by halftime.

Unlucky Sevens

Well that makes it seven straight wins for the Red Sox over the Yankees so far this season. Chien-Ming Wang, despite the 'good signs' that the YES announcers were talking about was terrible. If we are going to use the argument that 'this guy was a 19-game winner two years in a row and he deserves a spot in the rotation' then my question is, how long do the Yankees wait for 'that guy' to show up?

The lineup did its best, hitting three solo home runs (Posada, Damon, Teixeira) and Nick Swisher made an unbelievable diving catch but the Yankees were not able to put it all together and get a win.

Meanwhile in Flushing, things got ugly fast. After six solid innings by Mike Pelfrey and a 3-run lead, the Mets gave it back and then some in the seventh inning . A Jayson Werth diving catch in the bottom of the tenth to rob David Wright of a game-winning double PLUS a Chase Utley home run in the top of the eleventh off of Bobby Parnell equaled a comeback win for the Phillies.

Did you or were you interested in watching the MLB Draft last night?

No 86%

Yes 14%

Sorry Bud, but an overwhelming majority of people that voted in our poll today were not interested in watching the draft last night. As we said on the show, it's not a necessity to have the draft draw big ratings, but it would be very nice if there could be some way to get more interest in this (very complicated) process.

BREAKING NEWS: Jets Sign Mark Sanchez
Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 06:32 PM - Jets
Posted by Mike Ferrara

The Jets have signed what they hope is their franchise quarterback today to a 5 year- $50 million contract, with $28 million of it guarenteed.

Sanchez, who started just 16 games at USC, was the 5th overall pick and one that the Jets traded up to get. Most believe that going into training camp, it will be Sanchez's job to lose.

For the sixth straight time this season, the Red Sox have schooled the Yankees. The combination of Josh Beckett's dominance and AJ Burnett's inability to make pitches and get people out made for an easy win for Boston. Throw in a rare home run by David Ortiz, and that is just salt in the wound.

Luckily the game in Flushing has been a bit more entertaining. The wins that have been blowing off of the Harlem River, causing all the home runs at Yankee Stadium must have shifted toward east toward Queens as the balls were flying out of the park tonight. Johan Santana, despite giving up a few long balls, gutted out eight seven innings, even yelling at Jerry Manuel when he came to take him out after Chase Utley's home run to lead off the eighth. K-Rod has certainly been worth the money as he came on and got a big save. This was the game the Mets HAD to have...

---Great hockey game going on as they Penguins are trying desperately to stay alive and force a game seven back in Pittsburgh. I recommend turning on NBC to watch the final 20 minutes. After two periods, the Pens have a 1-0 lead.

(UPDATE) The Penguins just beat the Red Wings 2-1 in a THRILLING game that now forced a game seven back in Detroit on Friday. So far the home team has won every game in this series so Detroit has to be favored, but you obviously can't count Pittsburgh out whatsoever.

---Game three of the NBA Finals also has some hope, but its still early. Hopefully Orlando can show a little bit of life and make this series interesting.

---The cherry on top of what has been a very busy night in sports was the MLB Draft. The Mets did not have a pick in the first round. The Yankees selected CF Slade Heathcott out of Texas HS in Texarkana. The scouting report on him is that he is a great athlete with tremendous speed, despite having MCL reconstructive surgery last November. He is committed to LSU but is considered pretty signable.

The Nationals did the right thing and drafted the best player, even if signing causes huge headaches, it gives the fanbase something to look forward to.
